7 Tips for Reducing Sugar Cravings

Sugar cravings can be a difficult challenge to overcome when undertaking a medical weight loss program. However, with some planning and effort it is possible to reduce or eliminate sugar cravings and stay on track with your weight loss goals. Here are 7 tips for reducing sugar cravings during a medical weight loss program:

1. Keep Healthy Snacks on Hand – Having healthy snacks available at all times will help to satisfy your cravings for sugar and keep you from reaching for a sugary treat. Some good snack options include nuts, seeds, fruit, veggies, Greek yogurt, air-popped popcorn, dark chocolate or low-sugar protein bars.

2. Choose Low-Sugar Options – Even healthier snacks can contain added sugars, so be sure to read the nutrition label and opt for low-sugar options when available.

3. Drink Plenty of Water – Proper hydration is essential for a successful medical weight loss program since it helps to keep cravings in check. Try to aim for at least 8 glasses of water each day.

4. Avoid Triggers – If possible, limit your exposure to anything that may trigger cravings like advertising or shopping in the candy aisle.

5. Get Enough Sleep – Not getting enough sleep can lead to increased cravings for sugary foods and drinks, so aim for at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night.

6. Movement – Regular joyful movement helps to reduce cravings and boost metabolism to help you reach your weight loss goals.

7. Talk to Your Doctor – If you are having difficulty controlling your sugar cravings, talk to your doctor or RN about strategies for managing them. We have a variety of tools that we can introduce into your program.
